The BitTorrent community reached the end of another era today as Mininova, the largest torrent site on this planet has decided to delete all torrents that potentially infringe copyright and go truly legit. Mininova begun its rise to 'power' shortly after torrent titan Suprnova, back in early 2005, but as its popularity grew so did the attention it got from anti-piracy outfits.

Being based in the Netherlands, Mininova was targeted by the EU country's copyright guard, BREIN, who sued the torrent site for copyright infringement. This summer a Dutch judge sided with BREIN and ordered Mininova to delete all copyright-infringing torrents or face a fine of up to 5 million Euro.

Mininova's staff tested out various filtering systems to appease the court but since all proved to be technically impossible to implement on a large scale, they have been forced to simply delete all torrent except those uploaded via their Content Distribution service. Launched in 2007, Content Distribution enables producers and artists to publish and distribute their content for free through Mininova.

The 'new' Mininova looks, is a lot emptier than the one that became uber-popular and that will surely see a lot of its users move away in search of greener pastures full of torrents. Whether or not Mininova will survive as a legit torrent site it remains to be seen, one thing is certain though, the war on piracy wages on.
