Techconnect Magazine - Windows 2k/XP USB Mouserate Switcher (BETA 0.3)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

USB Mouserate Switcher lets you enforce a mouse polling rate
of 250 Hz (4 ms), 500 Hz (2 ms) or 1000 Hz (1 ms)
and lets you restore Windows' original "usbport.sys" (8 ms)
if needed.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Restart Windows and login to Safe Mode with an admin account
2. Run this utility in SAFE MODE and follow the instructions
3. Reboot your computer

Changelog - 0.2 to 0.3:

- completely rewritten USB Mouserate Switcher from scratch
- no prepatched files anymore, using a patcher instead
- "usbport.sys" version independence (should now work with any version of Windows 2k/XP)
- fixed 250 Hz "usbport.sys" (should work now)
- fixed 1000 Hz "usbport.sys" (should work now)

Please feel free to post bugs or suggestions here.

It should work with any mouse connected via the USB.
If the mouse does not support a certain polling rate, it shouldn't freeze but work at its hardware limit.

I've tested several mouses with 1000 Hz "usbport.sys":

DiamondBack: Effectively ~ 700 Hz
MX300: Effectively ~ 1000 Hz
MX510: Effectively ~ 450 Hz
MS Basic Optical Mouse: Effectively ~ 200 Hz

Sorry, but I could not test wireless mouses, because I don't own one.

So even if the tested mouse does not support it, it should not hang up.

I'd like to put a few things right regarding Warp2Search's article:

1. USB Mouserate Switcher (BETA 0.3) should work with every version of Windows 2k/XP respectively "usbport.sys". It is not only for Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4! USB Mouserate Switcher's goal (as of BETA 0.3) is version independence and flexibility.

2. USB Mouserate Switcher (BETA 0.3) should work with every localized version of Windows 2k/XP - not only with the English localization.

3. It is very likely that USB Mouserate Switcher (BETA 0.3) supports many more mouses than the Logitech MX series, Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3 and Razer's optical mouses. Technically it should work with every USB mouse.

MX wireless mice have their frequency locked by hardware (I believe) in the wireless transmitter.

So you can change the frequency to 500Hz, but the mouse and wireless station will still be locked at 125Hz.

I would assume all other wireless mice are the same.

Maybe someone can find a way to hardware hack the base station to up the freq.

I have'nt tried this utility yet.. but I want too, just don't wanna fry my USB controller .. lol?

Could you please tell me which patch (250, 500 or 1000 Hz?) and USB keyboard you used?
Did you try unplugging your keyboard and see if the mouse works when there is no other USB device connected?

Thanks for your report.

I installed the patch as instructed (via Safe Mode ect), which worked fine. My Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical went up to 600 Hz. However, on first reboot my mouse was back at 125 Hz... Any ideas about this? Is windows putting back its own driver or something?

Thanks, loc

It's Windows' own WFP/SFC (Windows File Protection/System File Checker), which restores the original "usbport.sys" on reboot.

I already fixed it, so you won't have this issue with the next release of USB Mouserate Switcher.

If you don't want to wait, here's the instruction how you can manage it yourself:

1. Run this utility like you did before in Safe Mode
2. Apply the wanted patch, click on "Quit", but do not reboot now
3. Go to "%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\" and copy "usbport.sys" to "%SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\i386\"
4. Restart Windows

Be sure that you do not have the Windows CD inserted on next boot!

Thanks for your report.

Hi Anir,

I tried your tool on a german Win 2000 SP4 and it does not work. I started it in Safe Mode and patched to 500Hz (it says: Patch successful) and I also copied the file in the DLLcache, but the Mouse Rate stays at 125Hz after rebooting.

If you like, I can send you the original and patched files for analysis.

My mouse is a Diamondback by the way, and worked ok at 500Hz with STRs Win2000 patch (which I cannot use since it collides with my Sidewinder Joystick drivers).

Regards,

Atalan

I have installed the software on a german Win2000 SP4, on tow machines.

I have a problem with one machine. The reason is, the usbport.sys does not exist on the machine.I thinks it depends on usb 1.1. On the other machine with usb 2.0 it works.

Is it possible, that the software only works with usb 2.0 ports ??

In the description of "usbport.sys" of Windows 2000 SP4 (5.0.2195.6681) it says "USB 1.1 & 2.0 Port Driver" , so it should be for both USB 1.1 and 2.0.

Sorry, but I can't tell you why "usbport.sys" does not exist on this machine, because it does not seem to be an issue related to USB Mouserate Switcher.

Atalan was so kind to send me his original and patched "usbport.sys" (they are properly patched).

Currently I can't test Windows 2000 (SP4) on my machine, because it crashes after installation.
That may be caused by my rather "exotic" hardware I use for a PC.

I will try to get Windows 2000 working on my machine in order to test it.

Maybe it's true and Windows 2000 is not supported...

Sorry, but Windows 2000 keeps crashing on my machine, so I won't be able to guarantee support for Win2k.

In the next release of USB Mouserate Switcher there will be a warning when using Windows 2000, but no restriction.
So if you want to try it on Win2k, technically you still will be able to, but I doubt it will work.
